Romania scrambles fighter jets after new drone incursions
Romania deployed multiple fighter jets on Tuesday after detecting two new drone incursions into its airspace, following a night of intense Russian aerial strikes on neighboring Ukraine.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the first drone crossed into Romanian airspace from the Ukrainian town of Vâlcov and moved toward the Chilia Veche area in Tulcea County. At 6:28 a.m. local time, two German Eurofighter Typhoons were launched from the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base to assess and monitor the situation. The aircraft later reported radar contact with the target, which had moved back into Ukrainian territory.
Roughly twenty minutes later, two Romanian Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons took off from the Borcea Air Base after radar systems detected a second drone intrusion in the Galați region. The Defense Ministry said the incident remains under close surveillance.
The neighboring Republic of Moldova also reported that a Shahed-type drone had entered its airspace earlier in the morning. Border police stated that the drone was tracked moving from the Vinogradovca–Vulcănești area toward the Romanian border, which it subsequently crossed. Moldovan authorities said they immediately notified Romania.
Just last week, Romania scrambled four fighter jets in response to a similar drone incursion, as tensions in the region continue to rise amid Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
