Morocco’s national carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) and China Eastern Airlines have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance air connectivity between Africa and China. The agreement, signed by RAM CEO Hamid Addou and Wang Zhiqing, Chairman of China Eastern Airlines, aims to bolster economic, cultural, and tourism ties between the two regions.

The partnership includes a codeshare agreement on key routes and the Special Prorate Agreement (SPA), allowing passengers from both airlines access to an expanded network of destinations and smoother travel connections. The agreement also underscores a shared commitment to improving operational and commercial integration, ensuring a higher standard of service for travelers.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Wang Zhiqing highlighted the importance of Shanghai’s strategic position as a hub and RAM’s significant presence in Africa. He expressed the airline’s dedication to fostering a sustainable aviation partnership to further develop the air transport market between the two regions.

Hamid Addou emphasized that the partnership aligns with Morocco’s broader vision of South-South cooperation, spearheaded by King Mohammed VI. He also recalled RAM’s pioneering role as the first airline to operate direct flights between Casablanca and Beijing. Addou added that the collaboration would deepen bilateral ties and strengthen human, economic, and cultural connections.

Royal Air Maroc resumed its Casablanca-Beijing flights in January 2025, operating three times weekly. Around the same time, Shanghai Airlines, a subsidiary of China Eastern, launched a new route linking Shanghai and Casablanca via Marseille, also with three weekly flights.

This partnership underscores the growing importance of aviation in uniting Africa and China, paving the way for expanded collaboration and mutual growth.
