Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also served as an adviser and personal lawyer to former President Donald Trump, is recovering after being injured in a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday. Giuliani’s head of security and local authorities have confirmed that the 81-year-old is “recovering tremendously” following the incident.

Details of the crash

The crash occurred just before 10 p.m. when a Honda RV, driven by 19-year-old Lauren Kemp, rear-ended a Ford Bronco in which Giuliani was a passenger. The vehicle was being driven by his spokesperson, Ted Goodman. The collision sent both vehicles into the highway median, causing significant damage, according to New Hampshire police.

State troopers and fire department personnel were already in the vicinity and immediately rendered aid. Goodman and Kemp sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. Giuliani, however, was taken to a trauma center with more severe injuries, including a fractured thoracic vertebra, lacerations, contusions, and injuries to his arm and leg.

Giuliani’s actions before the crash

According to Michael Ragusa, Giuliani’s head of security, the former mayor had stopped earlier to assist a woman who was reportedly the victim of a domestic violence incident. Giuliani stayed on the scene until police arrived to ensure her safety. Shortly after resuming travel, his vehicle was struck at high speed from behind.

Ragusa clarified that the crash was not a targeted attack and urged people to avoid spreading conspiracy theories. He also noted that Giuliani is “fully alert and conscious,” with his medical team optimistic about his recovery.

Messages of support and ongoing investigation

Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, expressed gratitude on social media for the outpouring of support, saying, “Your prayers mean the world.”

The crash remains under investigation by state police, with no charges filed as of yet.

Giuliani’s career and recent challenges

Often referred to as “America’s Mayor” for his leadership during the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks, Giuliani was named TIME’s Person of the Year in 2001. He later pursued a Republican presidential bid in 2008.

In 2018, Giuliani became Trump’s personal attorney and played a prominent role in the former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. These actions resulted in Giuliani’s disbarment in New York and Washington, D.C., as well as a $148 million defamation judgment against him, which he settled earlier this year.

Despite his legal and professional setbacks, Giuliani remains a prominent figure. His spokesperson stated that he is eager to return to work in the coming days.
