Russia claims to foil Ukrainian-Directed plot on gas pipeline near Moscow
Russian authorities reported on Saturday that they had thwarted a planned attack on a major natural gas pipeline near Moscow, allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services. A Russian citizen was detained while attempting to plant an improvised explosive device (IED), the Federal Security Service (FSB) said.
According to the FSB, the suspect was recruited in 2024 while held in a Ukrainian detention center for foreigners and sent to Russia under the guise of deportation. Ukrainian handlers reportedly instructed him to obtain a car and tools and provided coordinates to retrieve an IED disguised as construction glue tubes. FSB operatives intercepted him as he attempted to drill into the ground above the pipeline.
Moscow claims that the suspect planned to leave Russia after completing the attack and return to Ukraine via third countries. The FSB has also reported preventing several other alleged Ukrainian plots, including attempts to sabotage railways and target senior Russian military officials using chemical agents.
Russian authorities have warned that Kiev is increasingly resorting to terrorist tactics as the situation on the frontlines worsens, emphasizing the ongoing threat to critical infrastructure and national security.
