Russia: Tsunami warning lifted after 7.4-magnitude earthquake
Authorities lifted a tsunami warning on Saturday after a strong earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake registered a magnitude of 7.4 and was centered in the Pacific Ocean, about 111 kilometers east of the port city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of nearly 40 kilometers.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) initially cautioned about the possibility of hazardous waves of up to one meter along Russia’s eastern coastline. However, the alert was canceled shortly afterward as no significant rise in sea levels was observed.
The tremor caused alarm in the region, which is accustomed to seismic activity but remains highly vulnerable. In July, the same area was shaken by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake, one of the strongest ever recorded, which triggered a Pacific-wide tsunami and forced mass evacuations from Japan to Ecuador.
The Kamchatka Peninsula sits at the convergence of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, making it one of the most seismically active zones in the world. Experts continue to warn that the region is prone to powerful quakes capable of generating dangerous tsunamis.
