Ryanair Expands Morocco-UK Connection with New Marrakech-Birmingham Flight Route
The European low-cost carrier Ryanair has announced a strategic expansion of its Moroccan network with a new route connecting the cultural hub of Marrakech to Birmingham, England, scheduled to commence in winter 2024. The airline will operate three weekly flights on this route, enhancing travel accessibility between Morocco and the United Kingdom.
Elena Cabrera, Ryanair's Head of Communications, emphasized that this new connection will provide expanded travel options for both Moroccan residents and international visitors. This development is part of Ryanair's broader expansion strategy in Morocco, which has seen significant growth throughout 2024.
The announcement follows Ryanair's substantial investment in Morocco earlier this year. In May 2024, the airline established a new operational base in Tangier with a $200 million investment, introducing two additional aircraft and launching 25 routes, including 13 new destinations. The Tangier expansion connects the northern Moroccan city to eight European destinations and five domestic locations within Morocco.
This expansion initiative is expected to generate over 600 new employment opportunities, including 60 specialized positions for pilots and cabin crew. The airline projects a 70% increase in Tangier's flight capacity for summer 2024. Furthermore, Ryanair anticipates transporting more than 5 million passengers to, from, and within Morocco, marking a 31% increase in passenger volume.
The airline's commitment to Morocco is reflected in its cumulative investment of $1.4 billion, which supports more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs across major cities including Rabat, Marrakesh, Fez, and Agadir. Currently operating across 12 Moroccan airports, Ryanair continues to strengthen both tourism infrastructure and regional connectivity through its expanding network.
