Shaolin Temple leader under investigation for embezzlement and misconduct
The head of the renowned Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of kung fu in China, is under investigation for alleged embezzlement and immoral behavior. The temple announced the investigation in a statement released on Sunday, July 27, via its official WeChat account.
Allegations against Shi Yongxin
Shi Yongxin, the 59-year-old abbot of the Shaolin Temple, known as the "CEO monk," is accused of diverting funds meant for temple projects and assets. According to the temple's statement, he is also alleged to have "gravely violated Buddhist precepts" by maintaining inappropriate relationships with multiple women, fathering illegitimate children over the years.
The investigation is being conducted jointly by "several departments," the statement confirmed.
Luxurious lifestyle and past accusations
Shi Yongxin has faced similar accusations in the past. Former monks claimed he led a lavish lifestyle, owned luxury cars, embezzled funds from a temple-managed company, and fathered children with numerous women.
The controversy has sparked widespread attention on Chinese social media. A related hashtag amassed over 560 million views on Weibo as of Monday morning.
In a recent post on the same platform, Shi wrote, "When the mind is pure, the pure land is here, in the present moment."
This is not the first time Shi has faced scrutiny. In 2015, the temple denied similar allegations reported by Chinese state media, dismissing them as "malicious slander."
International expansion and commercial criticism
Shi Yongxin became a monk in 1999 and played a pivotal role in promoting Shaolin studies worldwide, combining Zen Buddhism with martial arts. Under his leadership, the temple established dozens of international businesses, earning him criticism for adopting what many consider a highly commercial approach.
In addition to his role as abbot, Shi was elected vice-president of the Buddhist Association of China in 2002 and served as a representative in China's National People's Congress, the country's highest legislative body.
Historical significance of the Shaolin Temple
Founded in 495 CE, the Shaolin Temple, nestled in the mountains of Henan Province, is regarded as the cradle of Zen Buddhism and Chinese kung fu. The temple’s global influence has made it both a spiritual and cultural icon.
