Shipwreck off Libya: 42 people presumed dead
Tripoli, Libya – Forty-two people are presumed dead after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Libya earlier this month, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Wednesday.
According to the UN agency, the tragedy occurred on November 3, when a rubber dinghy carrying 49 migrants — 47 men and 2 women — departed from Libya’s shores before sinking several days later.
The Libyan authorities launched a search and rescue operation on November 8, managing to rescue seven survivors, the IOM said.
The Libyan Red Crescent also provided medical assistance to the survivors after they were brought ashore west of the capital, Tripoli.
This latest shipwreck highlights the deadly risks faced by migrants attempting to cross the Central Mediterranean, one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes. Thousands of people continue to risk their lives each year trying to reach Europe from North Africa.
