Six armed Islamists killed in Algerian army operation
Algiers – Six armed Islamists were killed on Tuesday night during a counterterrorism operation carried out by the Algerian army near Tebessa, in the far east of the country, the Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday.
According to the official statement, detachments of the People’s National Army (ANP) eliminated “six terrorists” in the locality of Tlidjene, Tebessa province. Security forces seized six Kalashnikov rifles along with a significant quantity of ammunition.
The Chief of Staff of the army, Saïd Chengriha, visited the site of the operation to oversee the units involved, underlining the determination of the armed forces to eradicate what the authorities describe as the remnants of terrorist groups still active in the country.
Armed groups in Algeria have remained active since the civil conflict of the 1990s, often referred to as the “black decade,” which claimed nearly 200,000 lives. Despite the 2005 Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation, sporadic attacks continue in remote areas.
Earlier this year, the Defense Ministry reported that 35 “terrorists” had been neutralized by the army during the first half of 2025.
