South Africa: Five suspects killed in shootout with police
Five suspects were shot dead on Monday morning during a gun battle with police in Chatsworth, south of Durban, according to authorities.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said officers had launched a targeted operation against a group linked to murders, burglaries and extortion in the areas of Mpumalanga, Marrianhill and uMsunduzi. When officers arrived, the suspects allegedly opened fire, sparking a deadly exchange. No police officers were injured.
South Africa continues to face one of the world’s highest crime rates. Official figures show that 5,727 murders were recorded in the first quarter of 2025, with the majority occurring in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape provinces.
