Spain Braces for Record May Heatwave

Spain is on high alert due to an exceptionally intense heatwave expected to affect the country from May 29 to June 1. According to a bulletin issued by Spain's meteorological agency (Aemet) on social media platform X, these days could become the hottest ever recorded for this period since at least 1950, with temperatures exceeding seasonal norms by 6 to 7°C nationwide.

The heatwave is anticipated to last until Sunday and is driven by the arrival of a very hot air mass from northern Africa, explained Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo.

Large swaths of the country are expected to experience summer-like temperatures, with anomalies surpassing 10°C above average in several regions, especially in the north, east, and south of the Iberian Peninsula.

In Andalusia, temperatures may reach close to 40°C, according to forecasts. Del Campo noted that temperature records for May could potentially be broken during this period.

Spain, a European country particularly vulnerable to climate change, has seen its highest recorded temperatures over the past three years, frequently experiencing intense heatwaves.
