Spain's coastguard successfully rescued 11 crew members from a French fishing boat that began sinking off the country’s northwest coast on Sunday. The vessel, Ray Primero, issued a distress call early in the morning, reporting uncontrollable flooding about 10 miles from the coast of Galicia, a region known for its treacherous Atlantic waters.

According to the coastguard, the crew abandoned the vessel and sought safety in a life raft before being airlifted by a helicopter to an airport near the city of A Coruña for medical evaluations.

The ship, based in Lorient in northwestern France, remains adrift under the supervision of rescue teams. Efforts are underway to stabilize the vessel and tow it to port.

The incident highlights the dangers of navigating the often unpredictable waters off Galicia, a key fishing area in Spain where sudden storms and rough seas frequently pose challenges for sailors.
