Strengthening Decentralized Cooperation between Morocco and Mauritania
Morocco’s Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, welcomed Yacoub Ould Salem Fall, the Mauritanian Minister Delegate in charge of Decentralization and Local Development, during an official working visit to Rabat from May 4 to 8. The visiting delegation included senior officials from Mauritania’s Interior and Decentralization departments.
This high-level meeting reflects the strong fraternal ties and active cooperation between Morocco and Mauritania, guided by King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani. It aimed to reinforce South-South cooperation and joint action in addressing pressing development challenges.
During extended discussions, both sides reviewed Morocco’s advanced regionalization and decentralization model. They explored avenues to expand bilateral collaboration in this critical sector.
The two ministers emphasized the significance of decentralized cooperation as a strategic tool to enhance territorial governance and spatial development. They expressed a shared commitment to establish effective partnerships between Moroccan and Mauritanian local authorities. Key areas for exchange include solid waste management, public services, urban development, land use planning, and digital transformation.
The meeting also reviewed the progress achieved in recent years through joint local initiatives, highlighting successful cooperative projects and laying the foundation for future strategic partnerships.
This visit reflects the positive momentum in Moroccan-Mauritanian relations and their shared ambition to deepen collaboration in local governance, based on mutual respect, solidarity, and complementarity.
