A devastating landslide has obliterated the village of Tarasin in western Sudan’s Darfur region, killing over 1,000 residents and leaving only one survivor. The catastrophe was triggered by relentless rains that destabilized the Marra Mountains, burying the community under massive amounts of mud and debris.

Entire community erased

Located in the Marra Mountains, Tarasin provided refuge for families fleeing violence and famine in Darfur. Days of heavy rainfall culminated in a massive landslide that flattened the village, destroying homes, crops, and any signs of life. Images from the site reveal a barren landscape, with uprooted trees and layers of mud marking the area where the village once stood.

Only one survives

In a grim twist, a single survivor emerged from the disaster, bearing witness to the final moments of the community. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which controls the region, confirmed the total destruction of the village and emphasized the need for urgent humanitarian assistance. The group has called on the United Nations and international organizations to aid in recovering bodies and delivering emergency relief.

Calls for urgent aid

Sudan's Sovereign Council expressed condolences and pledged to mobilize all available resources to assist the affected area. However, access to the remote region remains a challenge due to ongoing conflict, rugged terrain, and unstable weather conditions. Darfur, a region already plagued by civil war and food insecurity, now faces one of its worst natural disasters in recent memory, compounding the suffering of displaced and vulnerable populations.
