Switzerland strengthens ground-based air defense amid growing drone threats
Switzerland has announced that it will give priority to reinforcing its ground-based air defense systems as concerns grow over the increasing threat posed by drones in Europe. The Federal Council confirmed its support for multiple parliamentary motions calling for urgent measures to bolster national security during the upcoming winter session.
According to public broadcaster RTS, lawmakers from both chambers have urged the government to accelerate investment in land-based defense capabilities, citing what they describe as an “extraordinary threat” to European airspace. The proposals call for acquiring new systems, securing sufficient ammunition supplies, and ensuring that Switzerland can neutralize large-scale drone attacks if necessary.
Officials noted that Europe’s security environment has worsened significantly in recent months, prompting the country to redirect limited military resources toward air defense. This shift is expected to delay or reduce funding for other defense projects, as the government acknowledges that immediate action is essential.
The move reflects Switzerland’s broader effort to adapt its traditionally neutral defense posture to fast-evolving technological and geopolitical risks.
