Sydney attack hero says he acted to protect innocent lives
The man praised as a hero after disarming one of the attackers during the deadly assault on Sydney’s Bondi Beach has said his only intention was to protect innocent people. Speaking to an American television network, Ahmed al Ahmed explained that he acted instinctively to stop further loss of life.
According to his account, he approached one of the assailants from behind during the attack and managed to seize the weapon, urging the attacker to stop. The intervention helped prevent additional casualties during the incident, which authorities later described as a targeted act of violence that left multiple people dead and many others injured.
Ahmed al Ahmed was himself wounded during the confrontation and required several surgical procedures. Despite his injuries, he said he remains deeply affected by the lives lost and expressed sorrow for the victims and their families.
Originally from Syria, Ahmed migrated to Australia years ago and has since built a life there with his family. His actions were widely shared on social media and drew praise from Australian and international leaders, who highlighted his courage and commitment to human values.
Australian officials have since taken steps to support his family, describing his behavior as an example of bravery, solidarity, and the principles that underpin Australian society.
