Tangier, a city of dreams that bridges past and present
The Daily Telegraph has highlighted the timeless charm of Tangier, portraying the Moroccan port city as a place that has modernized without losing its soul. Once home to around 400,000 residents in the 1970s, Tangier now counts more than 1.3 million inhabitants, yet its historic medina continues to preserve narrow streets, hidden staircases, and centuries-old character.
The newspaper pointed to a cultural renaissance in the city, citing the reopening of heritage spaces such as the Riad Sultan Theater in 2021, part of broader efforts to revitalize the medina. Tangier’s cosmopolitan past still echoes in the legacy of figures like American writer Paul Bowles, who made the city his home until 1999, and British art collector Christopher Gibbs, remembered for his role in preserving the Anglican Church of St. Andrew.
The report also recalled the residence of David Herbert, once a social hub for the British expatriate community. Today, Tangier is described as cleaner and calmer, combining its bohemian mystique with a renewed urban dynamism. According to the Telegraph, the so-called “city of dreams” continues to fascinate visitors, striking a delicate balance between tradition and modernity.
