Tangier Takes Flight: The Ibn Batouta Airport Transformation
In a bid to establish itself as a premier tourist hub, the city of Tangier, a gateway for visitors, is undergoing a remarkable transformation. At the heart of this endeavor lies the ambitious project to develop and expand the Ibn Batouta Airport, a crucial component of Tangier's allure. The city council has committed a substantial investment of 13 million dirhams to fund this project. Like a lover eagerly awaiting the return of their beloved, Tangier prepares to embrace the summer season with a series of revitalization initiatives.
In accordance with the multi-party agreement ratified during the ordinary session of the municipal council in May 2024, the Tangier commune has taken on the responsibility of constructing the necessary road infrastructure and multimodal connections to seamlessly link the Ibn Batouta Airport to various strategic locations within the city.
The colossal project, spanning 48 months and financed by multiple stakeholders and institutional partners, carries a staggering total cost exceeding 2.28 billion dirhams. Encompassing an expansive area of approximately 199 hectares, the project includes the construction of essential infrastructure, including aircraft parking aprons and connecting taxiways spanning over 160,000 square meters, as well as the extension and fortification of the airport's perimeter fence spanning 6 kilometers.
Among the project's key components is the creation of a vast passenger terminal building spanning approximately 55,000 square meters, accompanied by a new control tower equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Additionally, a new access road leading to the airport and a parking area capable of accommodating up to 1,400 vehicles are slated for construction.
The Ibn Batouta Airport development and expansion project, poised to catalyze the tourism and economic growth of Tangier, aims to increase the airport's passenger capacity from 1.2 million to an impressive 4.4 million passengers annually. This ambitious goal is designed to meet the anticipated passenger and travel movement demands by 2050, adhering to the optimal standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and upholding the highest safety norms within the industry.
A comprehensive rejuvenation is underway, with the Tangier commune launching a comprehensive road maintenance operation, having already secured the first contract in this domain with a financial commitment of 8,475,600 dirhams.
