Taylor Fritz dominates Lorenzo Musetti to start strong at ATP Finals

Taylor Fritz kicked off his ATP Finals campaign with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lorenzo Musetti on Monday at the Inalpi Arena in Turin. The American, last year’s finalist, showcased his exceptional serving skills, saving four critical break points in the third game of the first set to take control and never look back. Fritz won 84% of his first-serve points and was relentless against a visibly fatigued Musetti.

This match highlighted the stark contrast between the players’ preparation. Fritz, ranked sixth in the world, arrived in Turin a week early, while Musetti, 23, joined the tournament at the last minute. The Italian only secured his spot after Novak Djokovic withdrew due to a shoulder injury, following a grueling three-hour final in Athens against the Serbian.

Dominant serving and a decisive moment

The pivotal moment came in the third game of the first set when Fritz saved four break points, including two with aces. He then broke Musetti’s serve to take a 3-1 lead, which he maintained throughout the match. The American wrapped up the victory in one hour and 43 minutes, creating 12 break-point opportunities in total.

“I did an excellent job staying solid on my serve and saving some important break points,” Fritz said after the match. “I’m really happy with how I closed out the win.”

Fritz, who boasts a record of 52 wins and 21 losses this season, leveled his head-to-head record with Musetti at 3-3, earning his first win against the Italian in three years. His performance, rated 9.20 by the ATP, significantly exceeded his season average of 8.28.

Musetti struggles after a marathon weekend

Musetti, cheered on by the local crowd, delivered flashes of brilliance with drop shots and lobs. However, the fatigue from his extended weekend in Athens was evident. Seven of his nine service games went to deuce, and he double-faulted twice in a row at a key moment in the second set, handing Fritz the decisive break.

Despite the loss, Musetti showed promise in his ATP Finals debut but must recover quickly before facing Alex de Minaur in the evening session on Tuesday.

An increasingly intense tournament

Fritz will face top seed Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday afternoon as both players look to remain undefeated in the Jimmy Connors group. Meanwhile, defending champion Jannik Sinner began his title defense in the Bjorn Borg group. The tournament continues to captivate tennis fans as the season’s best players compete for the prestigious year-end title.
