At least ten people, including a child, were killed after Russian forces launched a massive overnight assault on Kyiv with missiles and drones, Ukrainian authorities reported on Thursday. More than 30 people were also injured, among them four children.

According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia fired 598 drones and 31 ballistic and cruise missiles during the night. Preliminary data indicates that 563 drones and 26 missiles were intercepted or neutralized.

The strikes caused severe damage in residential areas, leaving a large crater in an apartment building and destroying cars and shops in the city center. The European Union’s mission building in Kyiv was also damaged, prompting European Council President Antonio Costa to condemn the attack, calling it “horrifying” and reaffirming the EU’s support for Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of choosing “ballistic missiles over negotiations,” stressing that Russia has no interest in diplomacy. He urged the international community to respond with stronger sanctions and firmer positions, especially from countries like China and Hungary.

This latest wave of violence comes more than three years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II. Despite international calls for peace, both Moscow and Kyiv continue to blame each other for the lack of progress toward a ceasefire.
