U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 300 National Guards to Chicago, marking the fifth Democratic-led city to receive such a measure — an unprecedented move in modern American history.

“President Trump has authorized 300 National Guards to protect federal agents and property in Chicago,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson announced on Saturday, stating that the president “will not turn a blind eye to the lawlessness affecting American cities.”

The measure follows similar deployments in Los Angeles, Washington, and Memphis, all of which were opposed by local officials who deemed the intervention unnecessary. A comparable deployment in Portland, however, was temporarily blocked by a federal judge.

Judge Karin J. Immergut ruled that the protests in Portland did not constitute a “danger of rebellion” and could be managed by “regular law enforcement.” The decision halts the National Guard’s deployment until October 18.

Trump, who has made the fight against illegal immigration a key priority of his second term, argues that the U.S. faces an “invasion” of “foreign criminals.” Cities like Portland and Chicago — known as “sanctuary cities” — have recently seen several protests against immigration enforcement.

“There is no insurrection, no threat to national security, and no need for military troops in our great city,” said Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, urging citizens to avoid violence.

Democrats nationwide have strongly criticized the president’s move, viewing it as politically motivated. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon said the court’s ruling confirms “what Oregonians already know: we don’t want Donald Trump provoking violence by sending federal troops to our state.”
