Turkish maritime authorities announced on Tuesday that a third Russian-flagged tanker traveling through the Black Sea reported being attacked while heading toward Georgia. The incident follows two similar strikes in recent days, raising concerns about growing risks to regional navigation as the Russia-Ukraine conflict spills into key shipping routes.

According to Turkey’s Directorate of Maritime Affairs, the vessel — identified as the Midvolga 2 — issued a distress notification roughly 80 nautical miles off the Turkish coast, stating that it had been targeted while transporting a shipment of sunflower oil from Russia to Georgia. The crew of 13 was reported safe and declined the need for assistance.

The new episode comes shortly after Ukrainian security sources claimed responsibility for previous drone strikes on civilian vessels allegedly involved in covert transport of Russian oil, an accusation that adds a geopolitical dimension to the maritime incidents.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned the attacks on Monday, describing them as a dangerous escalation that jeopardizes environmental safety, maritime navigation, and lives within Turkey’s exclusive economic zone. Experts warn that repeated strikes could further destabilize trade routes across a sea that serves as a strategic corridor for global energy and agricultural markets.

The tanker was reportedly rerouted toward the Turkish port city of Sinop, located along the country’s central Black Sea coastline.
