Three Pakistani border security personnel were killed Monday in a suicide attack targeting their headquarters in Peshawar, located in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border, local authorities reported.

At approximately 8:10 a.m. local time, assailants carried out a suicide bombing at the front of the Border Police Headquarters, killing three officers on guard and wounding four others, according to Peshawar Police Chief Mian Saeed. Two attackers reportedly entered the facility before being neutralized.

AFP reporters at the scene observed bloodstains on the road and the headquarters’ doors riddled with bullets. Police officials confirmed that a clearance operation was underway to ensure no unexploded ordnance remained.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, promising that the perpetrators “will be found and punished” and reaffirming his commitment to “eradicate terrorism.”

The attack, which has not yet been claimed, comes amid a resurgence of assaults on Pakistani security forces. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of harboring terrorist groups, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), allegations denied by Kabul.

Earlier this month, a bombing outside an Islamabad courthouse killed 12 people and injured dozens, an attack claimed by a TTP faction reportedly operating from Afghanistan. Pakistan detained four suspects in connection with the incident.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over security issues escalated in October, resulting in cross-border clashes and explosions reaching Kabul. A fragile truce was later agreed upon, though details remain unclear.

2024 was Pakistan’s deadliest year in nearly a decade, with more than 1,600 fatalities attributed to such violence.
