Thunes launches instant money transfers to Moroccan bank accounts
Thunes, a global fintech leader, has introduced real-time money transfer services to Morocco, enabling users worldwide to send funds directly to Moroccan bank accounts in local currency, Moroccan dirhams. This new service ensures instant transactions, offering speed, transparency, and affordability for one of Africa's most vital remittance markets.
Morocco: A key hub for remittances
Morocco remains a major recipient of international remittances, with over $11.5 billion sent to the country in 2023. The demand for fast and reliable money transfer services has grown significantly, particularly among expatriates seeking efficient solutions to support their families.
According to Thunes’ 2025 "Money Without Borders" report, 65% of expatriates prioritize speed when selecting a money transfer service. Thunes’ direct integration with Moroccan banks offers quicker and more transparent alternatives to traditional systems, meeting this growing need.
Advancing real-time payments in North Africa
Aik Boon Tan, Thunes’ Chief Network Officer, emphasized the importance of the launch: “This expansion into Morocco represents a significant milestone for Thunes and our global network. It allows us to enhance the speed and efficiency of cross-border payments for both consumers and businesses.”
Chloé Mayenobe, President and COO of Thunes, added that speed has become an expectation rather than a preference for cross-border payments. “This service offers faster, cheaper, and more transparent transactions, providing an essential solution in one of Africa’s most critical markets,” she noted.
Thunes’ global presence and impact
Thunes operates a vast payment network spanning over 130 countries, 80 currencies, and connecting more than 7 billion mobile wallets and bank accounts. The network supports 320+ payment methods, including platforms like Orange, AliPay, and MTN.
This expansion into Morocco solidifies Thunes’ position as a leader in real-time, cross-border payments. It aligns with the company’s mission to include the "next billion" users in the global economy by improving access to digital financial services.
A boost for Morocco’s digital economy
For Moroccan individuals and businesses, Thunes’ service simplifies sending and receiving money. International workers can now support families more efficiently, small businesses can pay suppliers abroad with ease, and cross-border marketplaces can benefit from reduced transaction friction.
This development also supports Morocco’s growing digital economy. Faster, more transparent money movement fosters trust in digital payment systems, encouraging broader adoption and greater financial inclusion. Over time, this can stimulate economic activity and help Morocco expand its role in the global digital marketplace.
