Tragic Fire Claims Ten Lives at Spanish Care Home
A devastating fire at a care home in Villafranca de Ebro, near Zaragoza in northeastern Spain, has resulted in at least ten fatalities, with several others injured. The fire occurred early on Friday morning, around 05:00 local time, and emergency responders quickly rushed to the scene. At the time of the incident, 82 individuals were residing at the facility.
Originally established 16 years ago as a retirement home, the center later shifted its focus to providing care for residents with dementia and mental health issues. Emergency crews managed to extinguish the flames, though the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Initial reports suggest that a mattress in one of the rooms may have ignited the fire.
While the single-story building suffered minimal structural damage, the mayor of Villafranca de Ebro indicated that smoke inhalation was the primary cause of the high death toll. Local authorities have confirmed that two other individuals were hospitalized, one in critical condition. The Spanish government's representative in Aragón, Fernando Beltrán, offered condolences to the victims and assured that both the health of those in the hospital and the ongoing investigation would be closely monitored.
The tragic incident has shocked the nation, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also expressing his sorrow. This marks the second fatal fire at a care facility in the Zaragoza region in the past decade, with a similar incident occurring nine years ago, which claimed the lives of nine individuals.
