Train accident kills seven elephants in India
Seven wild elephants were killed and a young calf was injured after a train struck a herd attempting to cross a railway track in the northeastern Indian state of Assam on Saturday. The region is known for its rich wildlife and hosts a significant portion of India’s elephant population.
According to railway authorities, the accident occurred when a passenger train traveling from the remote state of Mizoram to New Delhi derailed after hitting the animals. Five wagons reportedly left the tracks following the impact.
Officials explained that although speed restrictions are enforced in designated elephant corridors, the collision happened in an area not officially classified as a wildlife crossing zone. This has raised concerns among conservationists about the safety of animals outside protected corridors.
The train driver reportedly applied the emergency brakes upon seeing the herd on the tracks. However, the short distance and the sudden appearance of the elephants made it impossible to avoid the collision.
India is home to tens of thousands of Asian elephants, and train-related accidents remain a major threat to their survival. Wildlife experts continue to call for expanded monitoring systems, better track management, and increased awareness to prevent such tragic incidents.
