Trial begins over Magdeburg christmas market attack
The trial has begun at the Magdeburg Regional Court against a man accused of driving his car into the crowd at the city’s Christmas market in December 2024. The attack killed six people and injured more than 320, including several children.
Due to the large number of victims and participants, the trial is taking place in a temporary high-security courtroombuilt specially for this case. Around 80 lawyers, over 140 co-plaintiffs, and dozens of journalists are present.
The suspect, identified as Taleb A., was brought to the courthouse under tight security, arriving by helicopter and escorted by armed police. According to MDR reporters, media interest far exceeds public attendance.
Local residents in Magdeburg say the event still deeply affects the community, almost a year after the tragedy. Some citizens question the long delay before the trial, while others emphasize the importance of due process in such a major case.
Authorities describe the trial as the largest in the history of the Magdeburg court, reflecting both the scale of the crime and its emotional impact on the region.
