Trump and Lula to meet in Malaysia during Asia tour
U.S. President Donald Trump has departed for a major tour of Asia, with a key stop in Malaysia where he plans to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The meeting aims to restore diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations after years of tension.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump confirmed the planned meeting: “I think we’re going to meet, yes.” When asked whether he was open to reducing tariffs on Brazilian goods, he replied, “Under the right conditions.”
The Malaysia summit, attended by leaders from the ASEAN and major global economies, will also feature Trump’s high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, focusing on trade relations and global economic stability.
Observers view the potential Trump–Lula dialogue as a sign of thawing relations between Washington and Brasília, particularly on issues such as climate policy, energy cooperation, and agricultural trade.
This will be the first formal encounter between the two leaders since Trump’s return to the White House earlier this year.
