Trump and Musk reunite at White House despite political fallout
President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are set to hold a joint press conference on Friday, despite Musk's recent departure from the Trump administration. Musk, who had been leading the Department of Government Efficiencyvnicknamed the "Doge"vwill officially step down the same day. Trump, however, praised Musk on his platform Truth Social, calling him “wonderful” and emphasizing that Musk would remain a valued advisor even after his exit.
Musk’s stint in government, which began in January, aimed to slash federal spending by hundreds of billions of dollars. While he managed to reduce spending by $160 billion, his tenure is widely seen as underwhelming. The public perception of his leadership took a hit, and his business ventures, including Tesla, suffered in the stock market.
Biographer Luc Mary described Musk's 130 days in office as the darkest period of his professional life, suggesting that the tech entrepreneur's attempt to enter politics was misguided. Musk’s bold, reform-driven approach reportedly clashed with bureaucratic reality.
As Musk departs, the future of the Doge remains uncertain. According to Sahil Lavingia, a former team member, the department might collapse altogether. He predicts that many staff members may simply stop showing up, signaling a quiet end to the initiative.
