Trump deploys nuclear submarines near Russia amid escalating tensions
U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines near Russian waters in response to what he described as "reckless and provocative remarks" by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The decision signifies a sharp escalation in the ongoing geopolitical tensions between Washington and Moscow.
Trump’s warning on Truth Social
In a statement shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump emphasized the gravity of Medvedev’s comments. “I have directed two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate areas, in case these reckless and provocative remarks prove to be more than words,” he wrote. Adding a cautionary note, Trump stated, “Words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
Russia’s response to U.S. positioning
The Kremlin dismissed Trump’s move, with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, issuing a stern warning on the social platform X. "Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran," Medvedev declared, cautioning Trump against “playing the ultimatum game with Russia.” He added, “Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step toward war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country.”
This comes amid heightened warnings from Moscow about the risks of Western involvement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin has repeatedly accused NATO countries of exacerbating tensions and increasing the likelihood of a broader confrontation.
A backdrop of escalating rhetoric
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, verbal exchanges between Western leaders and Moscow have intensified. Medvedev’s remarks serve as a reminder of the high stakes involved, with Russia cautioning that Western military support for Kyiv risks expanding the war beyond Ukrainian borders. The deployment of U.S. nuclear submarines underscores the fragile state of global security and the potential for miscalculation.
