U.S. President Donald Trump has once again expressed his growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, criticizing Moscow’s continued aggression in Ukraine. Despite campaign promises to swiftly end the conflict and surpass his predecessor Joe Biden’s efforts, Trump has struggled to secure a resolution to the war.

Speaking on Thursday, Trump condemned the latest wave of Russian airstrikes on Kyiv, which left at least 16 people dead, calling the attacks “sickening.”

Tougher sanctions and diplomatic efforts

In a defiant move, Trump confirmed plans to impose new sanctions on Russia, acknowledging uncertainty about their effectiveness but stating, “I don’t know if it will have an impact, but we will do it.” He announced that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, currently in Israel, would soon travel to Russia to continue discussions with Putin. Witkoff has met with the Russian leader multiple times in the past.

The U.S. president issued a stark ultimatum to Moscow, giving it until the end of next week to halt hostilities in Ukraine or face severe economic sanctions. “We will impose sanctions. I don’t know if sanctions bother him [Putin], but we’ll proceed,” Trump said.

India under scrutiny for ties with Russia

Trump also hinted at the possibility of introducing secondary sanctions targeting countries that continue to buy Russian oil and weapons. He specifically criticized India for its purchases, highlighting the importance of cutting off revenue streams that fuel Russia’s war machine.

Strained U.S.-Russia relations

After returning to power in January, Trump initially pursued a dramatic rapprochement with Putin, confident that his personal rapport with the Russian leader would swiftly end the war. However, this strategy has failed to yield results, leaving Trump increasingly vocal and critical of Russia’s actions.

The situation in Ukraine remains tense, with no clear resolution in sight as the U.S. ramps up both diplomatic and economic pressure on Moscow.
