Trump Revokes Security Protections for Former Advisers amid Controversy
United States former President Donald Trump has terminated security protections for Mike Pompeo, Brian Hook, and John Bolton, prominent figures in his previous administration known for their hawkish foreign policy stances.
The decision was first reported on Thursday, revealing that Trump’s order, which took effect late Wednesday, stripped Pompeo, a former CIA director, and Hook, a senior foreign policy aide, of their security details. This follows earlier news that John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, had also lost his security protection. Bolton confirmed the development earlier this week, expressing disappointment.
Trump defended his actions, questioning the necessity of providing lifelong security for former officials. Critics, however, argue that the decision is reckless, as Pompeo, Bolton, and Hook have faced assassination threats, particularly from Iran, due to their hardline policies during Trump’s first term.
Sources from the previous administration claim the threats to the three officials were well-known, calling Trump’s actions “irresponsible.” Analysts speculate whether these decisions stem from retribution, particularly as Bolton and Pompeo have had strained relationships with Trump. Bolton, who publicly criticized Trump after his departure in 2019, accused the former president of being unfit for office in his memoir. Pompeo, while less openly critical, briefly considered a 2024 presidential bid before campaigning for Trump.
During Trump’s presidency, the three advisers were instrumental in shaping the "maximum pressure" strategy against Iran, including the withdrawal from a nuclear agreement aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear ambitions. However, Trump’s future foreign policy direction remains uncertain.
Adding to the controversy, Trump announced the dismissal of Hook from his position at a Washington think tank. Additionally, security clearances for several former intelligence officials involved in a 2020 letter on the Hunter Biden laptop scandal were also recently revoked, further fueling debate over the motivations behind these actions.
