Türkiye will host the COP31 climate summit next year in the coastal city of Antalya, following a consensus agreement reached after Australia withdrew its competing bid. The arrangement grants Canberra the presidency of the negotiations, while Türkiye will serve as host nation.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the deal during an interview with ABC Radio Perth, outlining the structure of the shared arrangement.

“Chris Bowen, Australia’s climate change minister, will serve as COP president for the negotiations. The conference itself, along with the COP presidency, will go to Türkiye,” Albanese said. He added that a pre-COP meeting focusing on climate financing in the Pacific, including support for the Pacific Resilience Facility, will be held in the region before the main summit.

Albanese described the outcome as “a big win for both Australia and Türkiye,” noting that climate conferences require full consensus among participating nations.

“Without consensus, hosting duties would have defaulted to Bonn, Germany,” he added.

The agreement paves the way for Türkiye to stage one of the most significant annual gatherings on global climate policy, while Australia strengthens its leadership role in the negotiation process.
