A Tunisian man has been sentenced to death for posting Facebook messages deemed offensive to President Kais Saied, his lawyer and a human rights group confirmed on Friday, October 3.

The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by a court in Nabeul, in northern Tunisia. According to defense lawyer Oussama Bouthelja, the posts were considered an attack on the president, the justice minister, and the judiciary.

No details have yet been disclosed about the specific content of the incriminated publications. The Committee for the Respect of Freedoms and Human Rights in Tunisia (CRLDHT) strongly condemned the ruling, calling it a “very serious precedent” and a “monumental blunder” against a father of three.

The case has reignited concerns over freedom of expression in Tunisia, where critics accuse the authorities of tightening restrictions on dissent since President Saied assumed sweeping powers in 2021.
