Tunisia summons EU ambassador over alleged breach of diplomatic protocol
Tunisia’s President Kais Saied summoned the European Union’s ambassador in Tunis, Giuseppe Perrone, on Wednesday to express what he described as a strong protest over “violations of diplomatic norms,” according to an official statement released early Thursday.
The presidency did not specify which actions prompted the reprimand, but emphasized that Saied rejected “the use of practices outside officially recognized diplomatic frameworks.”
The move comes after the EU diplomat met on Monday with Noureddine Taboubi, head of the influential UGTT trade union, which has recently threatened a general strike to push for wage increases. Following the meeting, the EU delegation in Tunis highlighted the union’s “important role” in promoting social dialogue and economic development in the country — remarks that appear to have irritated the Tunisian leadership.
The incident underscores the growing tensions between Tunis and some of its international partners, as Tunisia faces mounting economic and social pressures.
