Greek authorities have confirmed that two people were killed and several others injured in a shooting linked to a family vendetta in the mountain village of Vorizia, on the island of Crete.

The incident occurred on Saturday, about 50 kilometers from Heraklion, the island’s capital. According to police, the victims were a 39-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman.

Police spokesperson Constantia Dimoglidou told state broadcaster ERT that a member of one family arrived in the village in the morning, encountered members of a rival family, and opened fire, sparking the deadly exchange.

Authorities said two men and two women were hospitalized, and investigators are treating the injured men as potential suspects. Reinforcements have been sent from Athens, and the chief of the Greek police is personally overseeing the investigation.

Local reports indicate that assault rifles and shotguns were used during the attack. The area has been secured as police continue to search for additional suspects.

Family feuds and vendettas remain a recurring problem in Crete, where illegal firearms possession is relatively common. Such disputes often arise from honor-related conflicts, and guns are frequently fired during weddings and local festivals. Just last week, a 23-year-old man shot and killed a 52-year-old during a village celebration in western Crete.
