U.S. authorities seize more than 700 drones during the 2026 FIFA World Cup

U.S. authorities have revealed that they confiscated more than 700 drones that entered restricted airspace during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting the extensive security measures implemented throughout the tournament.

According to U.S. officials, the operation was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal agencies. The enforcement campaign covered all 11 American host cities, where strict no-fly zones were established around stadiums and official fan areas.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) introduced temporary flight restrictions during match days, prohibiting unauthorized aircraft—including recreational and commercial drones—from operating near venues without prior approval. These measures were designed to protect spectators, teams, officials, and critical infrastructure from potential security threats.

Security experts have increasingly identified drones as a growing challenge for major international sporting events. While many drones are operated by hobbyists or media enthusiasts, unauthorized flights can disrupt air operations, interfere with emergency services, or pose safety risks to large crowds.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has required one of the largest security operations ever organized for a global football tournament. Authorities combined advanced surveillance technologies, airspace monitoring systems, and rapid-response teams to ensure a safe environment throughout the competition.

Officials emphasized that the majority of intercepted drones were seized for violating temporary flight restrictions rather than for criminal activity. Nevertheless, operators who ignored the regulations could face fines, equipment confiscation, or additional legal penalties under U.S. aviation laws.

The operation underscores the growing importance of drone management at major international events, as organizers worldwide continue to strengthen security strategies to address evolving technological risks while ensuring the safety of millions of fans.
