The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned two advertisements by Spanish fashion giant Zara, citing the depiction of models who appeared "unhealthily thin." The regulator criticized the images as "irresponsible" and in breach of social responsibility guidelines.

Details of the ads

The ads, which appeared on Zara's website in May, sparked complaints from the public. One of the images showed a model with "protruding" collarbones, and her pose and styling emphasized her "very slim" appearance. Another image featured a model whose "slightly gaunt" look was accentuated by a slicked-back hairstyle, lighting, and clothing that made her appear "noticeably thin," according to the ASA.

Zara's response

Zara defended the advertisements, confirming that the models were medically certified as healthy and met British health standards. The company also emphasized that only minor lighting and color adjustments were made to the images.

After being informed of the complaint, Zara removed the ads and reiterated its commitment to stringent guidelines in selecting and photographing models.

Wider impact

The ASA’s decision follows similar actions earlier this year, when ads from British retailers Next and Marks & Spencer were banned over comparable concerns. The regulator’s rulings highlight ongoing scrutiny of potentially harmful representations in fashion advertising, particularly regarding body image and societal responsibility.
