UK government's decision to demolish Grenfell Tower sparks controversy
The UK government has made the decision to demolish Grenfell Tower in London, the site of a deadly fire in 2017 that claimed 72 lives. This decision, confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to survivors and the victims' families, has been met with opposition from some relatives who believe the tower should remain standing until criminal investigations into the causes of the fire are completed, or be preserved as a memorial.
The government is set to make a formal announcement about the demolition. However, some relatives have expressed anger, with one group, Grenfell United, accusing Rayner of failing to explain her decision or consult adequately with survivors and families. The group claims that the majority of those consulted opposed the demolition.
While the government acknowledges the tower’s structural instability, it has emphasized safety concerns as the reason for its decision. Nevertheless, Grenfell Next of Kin, another advocacy group, has called for further discussion about the facts behind the decision and what will replace the tower.
A six-year public inquiry into the fire, which resulted from a series of failures including the use of highly flammable materials, criticized both local and national authorities for prioritizing profit over safety. Survivors and families continue to express frustration over the government's handling of the aftermath, with one relative stating that the community was failed by all parties involved.
