UK praises Morocco’s autonomy proposal during parliamentary talks
On Monday, June 2, 2025, at the Parliament headquarters in Rabat, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Rachid Talbi Alami, held discussions with a British parliamentary delegation representing both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, led by Mr. Fabian Hamilton. The delegation is visiting Morocco from June 2 to 5 to explore major national development projects initiated under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The talks highlighted the historic ties between the two countries and commended Morocco’s significant development initiatives as well as King Mohammed VI’s efforts at the national, regional, and international levels aimed at fostering development, social welfare, and international solidarity to ensure peace and security.
During the meeting, the UK’s support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal was acknowledged, recognizing it as the most credible, pragmatic, and viable basis for a lasting resolution to the regional conflict and the promotion of stability in North Africa.
The Speaker and the British parliamentary delegation exchanged views on the parliamentary experiences of both countries, noting similarities and differences, the relationship between legislative institutions and other branches of government, and foreign relations. They underscored the importance of bilateral and multilateral parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United Kingdom.
The British delegation included members of the House of Commons Mr. Charlie Dewhirst, Ms. Rupa Huq, and Mr. Iqbal Mohammed and members of the House of Lords Baroness Brown and Baroness Prashar alongside administrative officials from both sides.
