A Ukrainian drone struck one of Russia’s largest oil refineries on Saturday, causing a fire and minor damage, Russian authorities reported. The incident occurred at Bashneft’s Ufa facility, located about 870 miles (1,400 km) from the Ukrainian frontline.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show a drone approaching the refinery before exploding, producing a significant smoke plume. Radiy Khabirov, head of Russia’s Bashkortostan region, described the event as a “terrorist attack by aircraft-type drones.” He confirmed that one drone hit the plant while a second was intercepted.

“There were no casualties or injuries,” Khabirov stated. “The facility sustained minor damage, and the fire is being extinguished.”

Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, GUR, claimed responsibility for the operation. Since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Kyiv has targeted Russian refineries to limit Moscow’s financial resources for the war.

Recent Ukrainian strikes on oil processing facilities have affected production at several sites and contributed to higher fuel prices. Bashneft’s Ufa refinery, described by the Kremlin in 2016 as “one of the largest in the country,” produces more than 150 types of oil products.
