UN experts condemn arrest of Palestinian journalist in Switzerland
United Nations human rights experts and activists have strongly criticized the recent arrest of Palestinian journalist Ali Abunimah in Zurich, Switzerland, citing concerns about freedom of expression.
Abunimah, a prominent journalist and executive director of an online publication focused on Palestinian issues, was detained by Swiss authorities shortly before delivering a speech in Zurich. Swiss police confirmed his arrest, stating it was related to an entry ban and that further actions under immigration laws were being considered.
UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Irene Khan, expressed shock over the arrest and called for an investigation and Abunimah’s release. Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, voiced concern about an increasingly hostile environment for free speech in Europe.
In response, a human rights advocacy group in Switzerland initiated a petition demanding Abunimah’s release. Meanwhile, the US embassy in Bern confirmed it was offering consular assistance for the American citizen, though it declined to provide additional details.
Abunimah’s detention occurred shortly after his arrival in Zurich for a speaking tour. According to a statement by his organization, he was initially questioned for an hour upon entry but allowed to proceed, only to be detained later.
The arrest is seen as part of a broader trend in Western nations targeting individuals and organizations expressing solidarity with Palestine. Activists and journalists have reportedly faced arrests, raids, or charges under anti-terrorism laws in recent years.
During a protest in Geneva, demonstrators criticized Abunimah’s detention, describing it as unjust and lacking legal grounds. They emphasized the importance of free speech as a constitutional right in Switzerland and called for greater support for Palestinian activists and human rights defenders.
