Under Trump’s pressure, U.S. companies are rapidly “de-wokifying”
In the wake of Donald Trump’s return to the White House, major American companies are retreating from progressive positions they had embraced in recent years. After the killing of George Floyd in 2020, many corporations had openly supported social justice causes, aligning themselves with movements against racial and gender discrimination. Today, under political pressure, they are rapidly distancing themselves from what critics call “woke activism.”
The shift has accelerated since the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk earlier this month. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance urged citizens during a podcast to denounce anyone publicly celebrating the murder and, most importantly, to inform their employers. Several companies, including United Airlines and Nasdaq, swiftly dismissed employees who had posted comments perceived as justifying the violence.
Observers note that corporate America, once eager to take progressive stances on diversity, equity, and inclusion, is now scaling back or even dismantling such initiatives, fearing political backlash and public scrutiny. The trend illustrates the profound impact of Trump’s administration on corporate culture and the ongoing polarization of American society.
