Unexpected electoral surge strengthens Javier Milei’s leadership across Argentina
The legislative elections of 2025 delivered a stunning outcome that consolidates President Javier Milei’s political dominance. Argentina witnessed an overwhelming victory for La Libertad Avanza, which secured more than 40% of the votes nationwide. With over 90% of polling stations counted, Cabinet Chief Guillermo Francos announced that the ruling coalition had garnered 40.84% support, while the Peronist front trailed significantly with just 25%.
Buenos Aires defies expectations
The major surprise came from the province of Buenos Aires, traditionally a stronghold of Peronism. The list led by Diego Santilli managed to overturn a political landscape that had seemed firmly against the government. Just six weeks earlier, La Libertad Avanza had lost the local elections in this key district by 14 points. The reversal in Buenos Aires has become the crown jewel of a nationwide triumph that saw the ruling party dominate in 16 out of 24 provinces.
Renewed mandate amid previous turbulence
This sweeping result marks a turning point for President Milei after months of challenges, including corruption allegations and mounting financial instability leading up to the elections. Last week, the President had set a modest goal: to secure one-third of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies, enough to safeguard his veto power. Those expectations were not only met but far exceeded, giving the administration renewed political capital to pursue cabinet changes and advance the government’s reform agenda.
The legislative results reflect a broad endorsement of Milei’s platform, providing him with the political stability needed to steer Argentina through its economic and institutional challenges. Investors and policy observers now anticipate a more defined path ahead for the country’s governance and legislative agenda.
