A U.S. appeals court on Saturday blocked the deployment of the National Guard to Chicago, though the troops are allowed to remain in the state of Illinois. The ruling largely upholds the suspension issued Thursday by a federal judge regarding the mobilization ordered by President Donald Trump as part of his mass deportation campaign.

“It is hereby ordered to grant the request for an administrative stay regarding the federalization of the National Guard (which transfers control from the state to the federal government) and to deny it with respect to the deployment,” the court stated.

Federal Judge April Perry had earlier suspended the deployment for two weeks in the Democratic-led city of Chicago. The Trump administration appealed the decision, arguing that it was necessary to “protect federal agents and property” following demonstrations outside immigration enforcement buildings.

Around 200 National Guard members from Texas and 300 from Illinois had been sent to Chicago, according to U.S. Army data.

The appeals court’s ruling effectively halts the deployment until further arguments can be heard in the case.
