A group of about twenty Democratic-led states has pledged to defend access to mifepristone, a medication widely used in medical abortions across the United States. The announcement comes amid growing concern following a federal review launched by the Department of Health under the Trump administration, raising fears among advocates of reproductive rights.

Mifepristone, authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2000, is involved in nearly two-thirds of all medication-based abortions in the country. Local attorneys general from states including New York, California, and Michigan issued a joint statement stressing that medical decisions should remain guided by science and patient needs rather than political considerations.

“The decision to reexamine this medication ignores decades of research proving its safety and effectiveness,” the officials wrote. They also warned that if access to mifepristone were restricted, they would take legal measures to protect it.

This renewed debate over the abortion pill highlights the ongoing national divide on reproductive rights, especially after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn federal protection for abortion more than three years ago.
