United States: Father aiming at bird fatally shoots 14-year-old daughter
A tragic hunting accident occurred on July 21 in Illinois, Midwest United States, when 34-year-old David Schultheis aimed at a hawk inside a brick building and accidentally shot his 14-year-old daughter, Emma. She was taken to a hospital in St. Louis but did not survive the injury.
According to authorities, Schultheis extended only his arm into the room to target the bird, keeping his head behind the door to avoid a ricochet. The bullet struck the hawk but then passed through a window and hit his daughter.
The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Schultheis with reckless use of a firearm. The father voluntarily surrendered to the county jail, was questioned, and then released pending further proceedings. Investigations are ongoing, and a woman is also facing charges related to the incident.
Emma was set to celebrate her 15th birthday the following week. She was known for her love of sports and animals. Authorities emphasized that the case serves as a warning about firearm safety and the dangers of improper handling.
