The National Guard could be deployed as early as Friday to the city of Memphis, Tennessee, according to the city’s police chief Cerelyn Davis. During a municipal council meeting, Davis stated that “a few members of the National Guard are already in Memphis (…) but perhaps by October 10, we will see the first group of guards arriving in the city.”

This operation is part of Donald Trump’s strategy to send federal forces to Democratic-led cities in order to combat what he calls “crime.” The former president signed the deployment order on September 15, authorizing the involvement of the National Guard, the FBI, and other federal agencies — a total of 700 troops.

During a Senate hearing, Attorney General Pam Bondi said that “the National Guard will be where it needs to be to ensure the safety of Americans.”

Meanwhile, the planned deployment has sparked protests in Memphis. Demonstrators marched through the streets last weekend, chanting: “Fight poverty, not the poor.”

In Chicago, another city targeted by Trump’s initiative, 200 National Guard troops from Texas have already arrived in the area and could be deployed by Wednesday. Local Democratic officials have challenged the legality of Trump’s orders in court, accusing him of using security measures to punish political opponents.
