A US-supported humanitarian organization, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), has launched food distribution operations in Gaza despite mounting criticism and internal instability. The Geneva-based group announced on Monday that it began delivering truckloads of food to secure distribution points across the war-torn Palestinian territory, with plans to scale up operations daily and reach one million Palestinians within a week.

GHF, composed of former humanitarian, military, and government officials, has pledged to distribute 300 million meals in its first 90 days. However, its sources of funding remain undisclosed. Aid deliveries are being protected by private security contractors—an approach that has drawn widespread criticism.

The initiative has sparked strong backlash from both international organizations and local actors. United Nations officials, including humanitarian spokesperson Jens Laerke, have refused to collaborate, calling GHF’s model a “distraction” from essential relief efforts. The UN instead continues to advocate for the full reopening of Gaza’s border crossings and increased Israeli authorization for humanitarian supplies.

Adding to the tension, Hamas has issued threats against GHF and aid groups cooperating with it, warning the population not to engage with the foundation's system. Hamas claims the aid plan aligns with Israeli efforts to forcibly displace Gaza’s population—an accusation Israel denies, describing its migration plan as voluntary, despite widespread rejection from Palestinians and the global community.

The GHF also faces internal challenges. On Sunday, its executive director, Jake Wood, resigned after two months, stating that the organization's model could not comply with humanitarian principles of neutrality, independence, and impartiality. The foundation has since appointed John Acree as interim director, citing his experience in global disaster and conflict zones.

Despite the criticism and security threats, the GHF vowed to press forward, condemning what it described as Hamas’s attempts to sabotage its work. The organization reiterated its commitment to secure aid delivery and the protection of both civilians and aid workers.
