The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the marketing of a new generic version of mifepristone, a pill widely used in medical abortions across the country. The decision, normally considered a routine regulatory step, has provoked strong criticism from conservative groups.

Kristan Hawkins, president of the anti-abortion organization Students for Life Action, called the approval “unthinkable” and labeled it “a stain on the Trump presidency.”

Mifepristone has been available in the United States for over 25 years and is commonly prescribed in combination with another drug to induce medication-based abortions. It is also used in some cases to manage miscarriages.

The FDA had already authorized another generic version in the past, making this approval a continuation of existing health policy. However, the timing and political climate have amplified the controversy, as the abortion debate remains one of the most polarizing issues in American society.
